CONCEPT NOTE
“A good architecture becomes the pavilion to enjoy the landscape around.” The farmhouse is set amidst a serene pastoral landscape of coconut and areca nut farm ,deeply rooted in its natural and cultural context. The design seeks to blur the boundaries between inside and outside, allowing the landscape, light, air and existing vegetation to become integral elements of the living experience. The existing trees on site were carefully retained and became the primary generators for planning the built spaces. Open-to-sky and semi-open spaces are woven between the built volumes, creating a sequence of courtyards and shaded transitions. The house is organized around three courtyards: the central courtyard, pooja courtyard, and water courtyard. The central courtyard draws inspiration from the traditional “thotti mane or a central courtyard house ” where the main spaces are arranged around it. The material palette embraces an earthy, timeless character through exposed CSEB walls, stone, Mangalore tiles and Kota stone flooring. The use of CSEB significantly reduces embodied carbon while contributing to the thermal comfort of the interiors. Generous openings frame views of the surrounding landscape, promote cross ventilation, and maximize natural light inside the building and maintain thermal comfort. A significant element of the design is the transformation of the old well into a modern-day swimming pool, retaining the water element in its original location. This gesture preserves and evokes the childhood’s playful memories of old well.
